이 유전자는 X box라고 불리는 프로모터 요소에 결합하여 MHC class II 유전자를 조절하는 전사 인자를 인코딩합니다. 이 유전자 산물은 bZIP 단백질로, T 세포 백혈병 바이러스 type 1 프로모터의 인핸서에 결합하는 세포 전사 인자로도 확인되었습니다. 이는 바이러스 전사 활성자의 DNA 결합 파트너로 작용하여 바이러스 단백질의 발현을 증가시킬 수 있습니다. 소포체(ER)에 미접힘 단백질이 축적되면, 이 유전자의 mRNA가 엔도뉴클레아제인 IRE1(inositol-requiring enzyme 1)에 의해 매개되는 비정형 스플라이싱 메커니즘을 통해 활성 형태로 처리되는 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 스플라이싱된 mRNA에서 26 nt가 손실되면 프레임 시프트가 발생하여 기능적으로 활성인 전사 인자인 XBP1(S) 이형이 생성됩니다. 스플라이싱되지 않은 mRNA에 의해 인코딩된 이형인 XBP1(U)은 구성적으로 발현되며, ER 스트레스 회복 단계에서 표적 유전자의 전사를 중단시키는 XBP1(S)의 음성 피드백 조절자로 기능하는 것으로 생각됩니다. XBP1의 위유전자가 확인되었으며 5번 염색체에 위치합니다.
