이 유전자는 이종이량체 사이토카인 인터루킨 23(IL23)의 서브유닛을 인코딩합니다. IL23은 이 단백질과 인터루킨 12(IL12B)의 p40 서브유닛으로 구성됩니다. IL23의 수용체는 IL12의 베타 1 서브유닛(IL12RB1)과 IL23 특이 서브유닛인 IL23R로 형성됩니다. IL23과 IL12 모두 전사 활성인자 STAT4를 활성화하고 인터페론 감마(IFNG) 생성을 자극할 수 있습니다. 주로 미분화 CD4(+) T 세포에 작용하는 IL12와 달리, IL23은 기억 CD4(+) T 세포에 우선적으로 작용합니다.
