이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 면역글로불린 슈퍼유전자 계열에 속하는 축삭 당단백질입니다. 여러 면역글로불린 유사 도메인과 피브로넥틴 유사 반복(유형 III)으로 구성된 세포외 도메인은 단일 막관통 서열을 통해 보존된 세포질 도메인에 연결됩니다. 이 세포 접착 분자는 신경 세포 이동 및 분화를 포함한 신경계 발달에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 CRASH (corpus callosum hypoplasia, retardation, aphasia, spastic paraplegia and hydrocephalus)로 알려진 X-연관 신경학적 증후군을 유발합니다. 이 유전자의 대체 스플라이싱은 여러 전사 변이체를 생성하며, 이 중 일부는 신경 세포에 특이적인 것으로 간주되는 대체 엑손을 포함합니다.
