FGF 계열 구성원은 헤파린에 결합하며 광범위한 유사분열 및 혈관신생 활성을 가집니다. 이 단백질은 사지 및 신경계 발달, 상처 치유, 종양 성장과 같은 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이 유전자의 mRNA는 여러 개의 폴리아데닐화 부위를 포함하며, 비-AUG(CUG) 및 AUG 개시 코돈으로부터 대체 번역되어 서로 다른 특성을 가진 5가지 이소폼을 생성합니다. CUG 개시 이소폼은 핵에 국한되어 세포 내 효과를 담당하는 반면, AUG 개시 이소폼은 주로 세포질에 존재하며 이 FGF의 주변분비 및 자가분비 효과를 담당합니다.
