후천성 면역결핍 증후군(AIDS)의 원인균인 HIV-1은 복제 주기 동안 염색체에 통합된 DNA를 생성하는 RNA 유전체(genome)를 포함합니다. 전사 활성인자 Tat에 의한 HIV-1 유전자 발현 활성화는 전사 개시 부위 하류에 위치한 RNA 조절 요소(TAR)에 의존합니다. 이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 염색체에 통합된 TAR DNA에 결합하여 HIV-1 전사를 억제하는 전사 억제자입니다. 또한, 이 단백질은 CFTR 유전자의 대안적 스플라이싱을 조절합니다. 유사한 위유전자(pseudogene)가 20번 염색체에 존재합니다.
