이 유전자는 UV 유발 손상 후 DNA 절제 복구에서 DNA의 3' 절개를 수행하는 단일 가닥 특이적 DNA 엔도뉴클레아제를 인코딩합니다. 이 단백질은 RNA 중합효소 II 전사 및 전사-결합 DNA 복구를 포함한 다른 세포 과정에서도 기능할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 색소성 건피증 상보성 그룹 G(XP-G)를 유발하며, 이는 색소성 건피증 VII(XP7)로도 불리며, UV 광선에 대한 과민증 및 UV 노출 후 피부암 발병 위험 증가를 특징으로 하는 피부 질환입니다. 일부 환자는 심각한 성장 결함, 인지 장애 및 악액질을 특징으로 하는 Cockayne 증후군도 발병합니다. 이 유전자와 인접한 상류 BIVM(basic, immunoglobulin-like variable motif containing) 유전자 사이에는 리드스루 전사가 존재합니다.
