이 유전자는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 단백질 슈퍼패밀리의 분비성 리간드를 인코딩합니다. 이 패밀리의 리간드는 다양한 TGF-베타 수용체에 결합하여 유전자 발현을 조절하는 SMAD 패밀리 전사 인자의 모집 및 활성화를 유도합니다. 인코딩된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 잠복 관련 펩타이드(LAP)와 성숙 펩타이드를 생성하며, 성숙 펩타이드 동종이합체, LAP 동종이합체, 잠복 TGF-베타 결합 단백질로 구성된 잠복 형태 또는 성숙 펩타이드 동종이합체로만 구성된 활성 형태로 존재합니다. 성숙 펩타이드는 다른 TGF-베타 패밀리 구성원과 이종이합체를 형성할 수도 있습니다.
