이 유전자는 효모 Sir2 단백질의 상동체인 서투인 단백질 계열의 구성원을 인코딩합니다. 서투인 계열 구성원들은 서투인 코어 도메인으로 특징지어지며 네 가지 클래스로 분류됩니다. 인간 서투인의 기능은 아직 밝혀지지 않았지만, 효모 서투인 단백질은 후성유전적 유전자 침묵을 조절하고 rDNA 재조합을 억제하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 연구에 따르면 인간 서투인은 모노-ADP-리보실트랜스퍼라제 활성을 가진 세포내 조절 단백질로 기능할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자가 인코딩하는 단백질은 서투인 계열의 클래스 I에 속합니다. 대체 스플라이싱은 여러 전사 변이체를 생성합니다.
