이 유전자가 인코딩하는 단백질은 STAT 단백질 계열의 구성원입니다. 사이토카인 및 성장 인자에 반응하여 STAT 계열 구성원은 수용체 관련 키나제에 의해 인산화된 후, 세포핵으로 이동하여 전사 활성자로 작용하는 동종이량체 또는 이종이량체를 형성합니다. 이 단백질은 IFN, EGF, IL5, IL6, HGF, LIF, BMP2를 포함한 다양한 사이토카인 및 성장 인자에 반응하여 인산화를 통해 활성화됩니다. 이 단백질은 세포 자극에 반응하여 다양한 유전자의 발현을 매개하며, 따라서 세포 성장 및 세포자멸사와 같은 많은 세포 과정에서 핵심적인 역할을 합니다. 작은 GTPase인 Rac1은 이 단백질에 결합하여 활성을 조절하는 것으로 나타났습니다. PIAS3 단백질은 이 단백질의 특이적 억제제입니다. 이 유전자는 또한 바이러스 및 세균 감염에 대한 숙주 반응을 조절하는 데 중요한 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 영아기 발병 다기관 자가면역 질환 및 과면역글로불린 E 증후군과 관련이 있습니다.
