이 유전자는 homeodomain 단백질의 bicoid 클래스에 속하는 RIEG/PITX homeobox 계열의 구성원을 인코딩합니다. 인코딩된 단백질은 전사 인자 역할을 하며 procollagen lysyl hydroxylase 유전자 발현을 조절합니다. 이 단백질은 somatotroph 및 lactotroph 세포 표현형의 최종 분화에 중요한 역할을 하며, 눈, 치아 및 복부 기관의 발달에 관여하고, 프로락틴의 기저 및 호르몬 조절 활성에 관여하는 전사 조절자 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 Axenfeld-Rieger 증후군, iridogoniodysgenesis 증후군 및 산발적인 Peters anomaly 사례와 관련이 있습니다. 다른 척추동물의 유사 단백질은 발달 중 좌우 비대칭 결정에 관여합니다. 상이한 이소형을 인코딩하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
