이 유전자는 leukemia inhibitory factor/oncostatin-M (LIF/OSM) 단백질 계열의 구성원을 인코딩합니다. 인코딩된 전구단백질은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 성숙 단백질을 생성합니다. 이 단백질은 여러 종양 세포주의 증식을 억제하는 분비성 사이토카인 및 성장 조절자입니다. 또한 내피세포에서 interleukin 6, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor를 포함한 다른 사이토카인의 생산을 조절합니다. 이 유전자와 관련 유전자인 leukemia inhibitory factor는 모두 22번 염색체에 존재하며, 공통 조상 유전자의 복제로부터 유래했을 수 있습니다. 대안적 스플라이싱은 여러 전사 변이체를 생성하며, 이 중 적어도 하나는 단백질 분해 과정을 거치는 이소형을 인코딩합니다.
