이 유전자는 T 세포와 자연 살해 세포에 작용하며 광범위한 생물학적 활성을 가진 사이토카인의 소단위를 인코딩합니다. 이 사이토카인은 이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 35-kD 소단위와 사이토카인 수용체 계열의 구성원인 40-kD 소단위로 구성된 이황화 결합 이종이량체입니다. 이 사이토카인은 T 세포 비의존성 인터페론(IFN)-감마 유도에 필요하며, Th1 및 Th2 세포의 분화에 중요합니다. 림프구의 이 사이토카인에 대한 반응은 전사 활성 단백질 STAT4에 의해 매개됩니다. 선천 면역에서 이 사이토카인의 신호 전달 과정에 질소 산화물 합성효소 2A (NOS2A/NOS2)가 필요하다는 것이 밝혀졌습니다.
