강글리오사이드 GD3 합성효소는 마우스 신경모세포종 세포주 Neuro2a에 형질감염될 때 신경돌기 발아를 동반한 세포 분화를 유발합니다. 분화 후, 강글리오사이드 유도 분화 관련 단백질 1 (Gdap1)을 인코딩하는 단백질을 포함한 여러 유전자의 발현이 상향 조절됩니다. 유사한 유전자가 인간에서 발견되었으며, 인간 유전자의 돌연변이는 샤르코-마리-투스 4A형 질병과 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 인간 GDAP1 단백질과 서열이 유사합니다. 이 유전자에서 다른 이소폼을 인코딩하는 여러 전사 변이체와 비코딩 전사 변이체가 발견되었습니다.
