이 유전자는 퍼옥시다아제(peroxidase) 단백질 계열의 구성원을 인코딩합니다. 인코딩된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 성숙한 효소를 생성합니다. 침샘, 유선 및 기타 점막샘에서 분비된 후, 이 효소는 항균 물질인 하이포티오시아누스산(hypothioocyanous acid) 생성을 촉매합니다. 이 유전자는 17번 염색체의 유전자 클러스터에 존재합니다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사 변이체가 생성되며, 이 중 적어도 하나는 단백질 분해 과정을 거치는 전구단백질을 인코딩합니다.
