이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 케라틴 계열의 구성원입니다. 케라틴은 상피 세포의 구조적 무결성을 담당하는 중간 섬유 단백질이며, 세포 케라틴(cytokeratin)과 모발 케라틴(hair keratin)으로 세분됩니다. 제1형 세포 케라틴은 이형 케라틴 사슬 쌍으로 배열된 산성 단백질로 구성됩니다. 이 세포 케라틴은 성숙한 장세포와 술잔세포의 주요 세포 단백질이며, 위 및 장 점막에서 특이적으로 발현됩니다. 제1형 세포 케라틴 유전자들은 염색체 17q12-q21 영역에 군집되어 있습니다.
