이 유전자가 인코딩하는 단백질은 세 쌍의 비동일 폴리펩타이드 사슬로 구성된 혈액 내 당단백질인 피브리노겐의 감마 성분입니다. 혈관 손상 후, 피브리노겐은 트롬빈에 의해 절단되어 혈전의 가장 풍부한 구성 요소인 피브린을 형성합니다. 또한, 피브리노겐과 피브린의 다양한 절단 산물은 세포 부착 및 확산을 조절하고, 혈관 수축 및 화학 주성 활성을 나타내며, 여러 세포 유형에 대한 유사분열 촉진제 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 dysfibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia 및 thrombophilia를 포함한 여러 질환을 유발합니다. 대체 스플라이싱은 다른 아이소폼을 인코딩하는 전사 변이체를 생성합니다.
