히스톤은 진핵생물의 염색체 섬유의 뉴클레오솜 구조를 담당하는 기본 핵 단백질입니다. 네 가지 핵심 히스톤(H2A, H2B, H3, H4) 각각 두 분자가 팔량체를 형성하며, 그 주위에 약 146 bp의 DNA가 뉴클레오솜이라고 불리는 반복 단위로 감겨 있습니다. 링커 히스톤 H1은 뉴클레오솜 사이의 링커 DNA와 상호작용하며 염색질을 고차 구조로 압축하는 기능을 합니다. 이 유전자는 인트론이 없으며, 히스톤 H1 계열의 구성원인 복제 의존성 히스톤을 인코딩합니다. 이 유전자에서 유래한 전사체는 폴리A 꼬리가 없지만 대신 회문형 종결 요소를 포함합니다. 이 유전자는 6p22-p21.3 염색체의 작은 히스톤 유전자 클러스터에서 발견됩니다.
