이 유전자가 인코딩하는 단백질은 CD3-epsilon 폴리펩타이드로, CD3-gamma, -delta, -zeta 및 T세포 수용체 alpha/beta와 gamma/delta 헤테로다이머와 함께 T세포 수용체-CD3 복합체를 형성합니다. 이 복합체는 항원 인식을 여러 세포 내 신호 전달 경로와 연결하는 데 중요한 역할을 합니다. epsilon, gamma, delta 폴리펩타이드를 인코딩하는 유전자들은 11번 염색체의 동일한 클러스터에 위치합니다. epsilon 폴리펩타이드는 T세포 발달에 필수적인 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자의 결함은 면역결핍을 유발합니다. 이 유전자는 또한 여성의 제1형 당뇨병 감수성과도 관련이 있습니다.
