이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 세포 사멸의 실행 단계에서 중심적인 역할을 하는 시스테인-아스파르트산 프로테아제입니다. 인코딩된 단백질은 poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase를 절단하고 비활성화하는 동시에, sterol regulatory element binding proteins뿐만 아니라 caspase 6, 7, 9를 절단하고 활성화합니다. 이 단백질 자체는 caspase 8, 9, 10에 의해 처리됩니다. 이 단백질은 알츠하이머병의 신경 세포 사멸과 관련된 아밀로이드-베타 4A 전구체 단백질의 절단에 관여하는 주요 카스파제입니다.
