이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 아르기닌 생합성 경로의 마지막 단계 직전 반응을 촉매합니다. 인간 게놈 전체에 걸쳐 위유전자를 포함하여 약 10~14개의 이 유전자 사본이 흩어져 있으며, 이 중 9번 염색체에 위치한 유전자만이 아르기노숙시네이트 합성효소의 유일한 기능성 유전자로 보입니다. 이 유전자의 9번 염색체 사본에 발생한 돌연변이는 시트룰린혈증을 유발합니다. 이 유전자에서는 동일한 단백질을 인코딩하는 두 가지 전사체 변이체가 발견되었습니다.
