이 유전자는 인체 혈액에서 가장 풍부한 단백질을 인코딩합니다. 이 단백질은 혈장 콜로이드 삼투압 조절에 기능하며 호르몬, 지방산, 대사 산물 등 다양한 내인성 분자뿐만 아니라 외인성 약물의 운반 단백질 역할을 합니다. 또한, 이 단백질은 넓은 기질 특이성을 가진 에스테라아제 유사 활성을 나타냅니다. 인코딩된 전구단백질은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 성숙 단백질을 생성합니다. 이 단백질에서 유래한 펩타이드인 EPI-X4는 CXCR4 케모카인 수용체의 내인성 억제제입니다.
