HMG-CoA 환원효소는 콜레스테롤 합성의 속도 제한 효소이며, 환원효소가 촉매하는 반응의 산물인 메발론산에서 유래한 스테롤 및 비스테롤 대사 산물에 의해 매개되는 음성 피드백 메커니즘을 통해 조절됩니다. 일반적으로 포유류 세포에서 이 효소는 LDL 수용체를 통한 저밀도 지단백질(LDL)의 내부화 및 분해에서 유래한 콜레스테롤에 의해 억제됩니다. 환원효소의 경쟁적 억제제는 간에서 LDL 수용체의 발현을 유도하며, 이는 혈장 LDL의 이화를 증가시키고 죽상경화증의 중요한 결정 인자인 혈장 콜레스테롤 농도를 낮춥니다. 다른 이소형을 인코딩하는 대체 스플라이싱된 전사 변이체가 이 유전자에서 발견되었습니다.
