이 유전자는 클라우딘 계열의 구성원을 인코딩한다. 클라우딘은 통합 막 단백질이자 밀착 연접 가닥의 구성 요소이다. 밀착 연접 가닥은 상피 또는 내피 세포층 사이의 세포간 공간을 통해 용질과 물이 자유롭게 통과하는 것을 방지하는 물리적 장벽 역할을 하며, 세포 극성 유지 및 신호 전달에도 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 유전자는 궤양성 대장염 환자에서 상향 조절되며, 침윤성 관상 선암에서 고도로 과발현된다. PKC/MAPK/AP-1 (protein kinase C/mitogen-activated protein kinase/activator protein-1) 의존성 경로는 위 세포에서 이 유전자의 발현을 조절한다. 다른 이소폼을 인코딩하는 대안적 스플라이싱 전사 변이체가 확인되었다.
