이 유전자는 작은 분비 단백질인 리포칼린(lipocalin) 계열의 구성원을 인코딩합니다. 리포칼린은 다양한 소수성 리간드에 결합하는 세포외 수송 단백질입니다. 인코딩된 단백질은 눈물에서 주요 지질 결합 단백질이며, 감염 및 스트레스를 포함한 여러 자극에 반응하여 과잉 생산됩니다. 이 단백질은 염색체 이수성(aneuploidy)의 마커이자 쇼그렌 증후군(Sjogren's syndrome)의 자가항원일 수 있습니다. 이 유전자에서는 여러 이소폼을 인코딩하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 관찰되었으며, 이 유전자의 두 개의 위유전자(pseudogene) 또한 9번 염색체 장완에 위치합니다.
