이 유전자는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 단백질 슈퍼패밀리의 분비형 리간드를 인코딩합니다. 이 패밀리의 리간드는 다양한 TGF-베타 수용체에 결합하여 유전자 발현을 조절하는 SMAD 패밀리 전사 인자의 모집 및 활성화를 유도합니다. 인코딩된 전구단백질은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 이황화 결합된 동종이량체의 각 소단위를 생성합니다. 이 단백질은 난소 기능을 조절합니다. 이 유전자의 발현 감소는 다낭성 난소 증후군과 관련이 있을 수 있으며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 이란성 쌍둥이의 어머니에게서 더 흔할 수 있습니다.
