이 항균 유전자는 16번 염색체 장완에 군집된 여러 Cys-Cys (CC) 사이토카인 유전자 중 하나입니다. 사이토카인은 면역 조절 및 염증 과정에 관여하는 분비 단백질 계열입니다. CC 사이토카인은 두 개의 인접한 시스테인으로 특징지어지는 단백질입니다. 이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 사이토카인은 T 림프구에 대한 화학주성 활성을 나타내지만, 단핵구나 과립구에는 나타내지 않습니다. 이 유전자의 산물은 케모카인 수용체 CCR4 및 CCR8에 결합합니다. 이 케모카인은 흉선에서의 T 세포 발달뿐만 아니라 성숙 T 세포의 이동 및 활성화에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
