이 유전자가 인코딩하는 단백질은 G단백질 결합 수용체 계열의 구성원입니다. 이 단백질은 인터루킨 8 (IL8)의 수용체입니다. IL8에 높은 친화도로 결합하며, G단백질 활성화 2차 전달자 시스템을 통해 신호를 전달합니다. 쥐를 이용한 녹아웃 연구는 이 단백질이 발달 중인 척수에서 배아 희소돌기아교세포 전구체(oligodendrocyte precursor) 이동을 억제한다는 것을 시사했습니다. 이 유전자, 또 다른 고친화성 IL8 수용체를 인코딩하는 유전자 IL8RB, 그리고 IL8RB의 위유전자(pseudogene)인 IL8RBP는 2q33-q36 염색체 영역에 매핑된 유전자 클러스터를 형성합니다.
