이 유전자는 전사 활성화, DNA 결합 및 올리고머화 도메인을 포함하는 종양 억제 단백질을 인코딩합니다. 인코딩된 단백질은 다양한 세포 스트레스에 반응하여 표적 유전자의 발현을 조절함으로써 세포 주기 정지, 세포자멸사, 노화, DNA 복구 또는 대사 변화를 유도합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 리-프라우메니 증후군과 같은 유전성 암을 포함한 다양한 인체 암과 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자의 대안적 스플라이싱과 대체 프로모터의 사용은 여러 전사 변이체와 이소형을 초래합니다. 또한, 동일한 전사 변이체에서 대체 번역 개시 코돈의 사용으로 인해 추가적인 이소형이 생성되는 것으로 나타났습니다 (PMID: 12032546, 20937277).
