이 유전자는 피브로넥틴을 인코딩합니다. 피브로넥틴은 혈장에 용해성 이량체 형태로 존재하며, 세포 표면과 세포외 기질에는 이량체 또는 다량체 형태로 존재하는 당단백질입니다. 인코딩된 전구단백질은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 성숙 단백질을 생성합니다. 피브로넥틴은 배아 발생, 상처 치유, 혈액 응고, 숙주 방어 및 전이를 포함한 세포 부착 및 이동 과정에 관여합니다. 이 유전자는 대체 스플라이싱이 일어나는 세 가지 영역을 가지며, 잠재적으로 20가지의 다른 전사 변이체를 생성할 수 있습니다. 이 중 적어도 하나는 단백질 분해 과정을 거치는 이소형을 인코딩합니다. 일부 변이체의 전체 길이는 아직 결정되지 않았습니다.
