이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 적혈구 특이 단백질과 유비쿼터스 전사 인자 CP2는 태아 적혈구에서 감마-글로빈 유전자의 우선적인 발현에 관여하는 stage selector protein (SSP) 복합체를 형성합니다. 인프레임 상류 비-AUG (CUG) 번역 개시 코돈과 하류 AUG 코돈의 대체 사용은 두 가지 아이소폼을 생성합니다. 긴 아이소폼(22 kDa)은 활성제로 작용하는 반면, 짧은 아이소폼(14 kDa)은 감마-글로빈 유전자 발현을 억제하는 것으로 나타났습니다. 이 유전자는 FBXL13 유전자의 인트론 내 반대 가닥에 위치합니다.
