이 유전자는 시스테인-아스파르트산 프로테아제(caspase) 계열의 구성원을 인코딩합니다. 카스파제(caspase)의 순차적 활성화는 세포 사멸의 실행 단계에서 중심적인 역할을 합니다. 카스파제는 비활성 프로효소 형태로 존재하며, 보존된 아스파르트산 잔기에서 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 활성 효소를 형성하기 위해 이합체화되는 두 개의 서브유닛(큰 서브유닛과 작은 서브유닛)을 생성합니다. 인코딩된 단백질의 전구체는 caspase 3과 10에 의해 절단되며, 세포 사멸 자극 시 활성화되어 세포 사멸을 유도합니다. 이 유전자에 대해 여러 이소폼을 인코딩하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이체가 관찰되었습니다.
