이 유전자는 막 결합 당단백질을 인코딩합니다. 인코딩된 단백질은 효소로 작용하며 갑상선 기능에 중심적인 역할을 합니다. 이 단백질은 티로글로불린(thyroglobulin) 내 티로신 잔기의 요오드화 및 요오드화된 티로신 쌍 사이의 페녹시-에스테르 형성을 통해 갑상선 호르몬인 티록신(thyroxine)과 트리요오드티로닌(triiodothyronine)을 생성하는 기능을 합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 선천성 갑상선 기능 저하증, 선천성 갑상선종, 갑상선 호르몬 유기화 결함 IIA를 포함한 여러 갑상선 호르몬 생성 장애와 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자에서는 서로 다른 이소폼을 인코딩하는 여러 전사 변이체가 확인되었지만, 일부 변이체의 전체 길이는 아직 결정되지 않았습니다.
