보체 성분 C3는 보체 시스템 활성화에 중심적인 역할을 합니다. C3의 활성화는 고전적 및 대체 보체 활성화 경로 모두에 필요합니다. 인코딩된 전구단백질은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 성숙 단백질을 형성하는 알파 및 베타 서브유닛을 생성하며, 이 성숙 단백질은 다시 추가적인 과정을 거쳐 수많은 펩타이드 산물을 생성합니다. C3a 아나필락시스독소로도 알려진 C3a 펩타이드는 염증을 조절하고 항균 활성을 가집니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 인간 환자에서 비정형 용혈성 요독 증후군 및 연령 관련 황반변성과 관련이 있습니다.
