아미노아실-tRNA 합성효소는 해당 아미노산에 의해 tRNA의 아미노아실화를 촉매합니다. tRNA에 포함된 뉴클레오타이드 삼중항과 아미노산을 연결하는 중심 역할 때문에 아미노아실-tRNA 합성효소는 진화 과정에서 처음 나타난 단백질 중 하나로 여겨집니다. 트립토파닐-tRNA 합성효소에는 세포질 형태인 WARS와 미토콘드리아 형태인 WARS2의 두 가지 형태가 존재합니다. 트립토파닐-tRNA 합성효소 (WARS)는 트립토판으로 tRNA(trp)의 아미노아실화를 촉매하며 인터페론에 의해 유도됩니다. 트립토파닐-tRNA 합성효소는 Class I tRNA 합성효소 패밀리에 속합니다. 이 유전자에서는 두 가지 다른 이소형을 인코딩하는 네 가지 전사 변이체가 발견되었습니다.
