이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 혈장 내 대부분의 구리를 결합하는 금속 단백질이며, Fe(II)transferrin의 Fe(III) transferrin으로의 과산화에 관여합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 철 축적 및 조직 손상을 초래하는 aceruloplasminemia를 유발하며, 이는 당뇨병 및 신경학적 이상과 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자에 대해 두 가지 전사 변이체가 발견되었으며, 하나는 단백질 코딩이고 다른 하나는 단백질 코딩이 아닙니다.
