이 유전자가 인코딩하는 단백질은 IL-1 계열의 전염증성 사이토카인으로, 대식세포 및 각질세포를 포함한 다양한 세포의 세포질 내에서 전구체 형태로 구성적으로 발견됩니다. 비활성 IL-18 전구체는 caspase-1에 의해 활성 형태로 처리되며, 인터페론 감마 생성을 자극하고 T 도우미 (Th) 1 및 Th2 반응을 모두 조절할 수 있습니다. 이 사이토카인은 다양한 장기의 손상과 사이토카인 폭풍으로 특징지어지는 잠재적으로 치명적인 상태에 연루되어 있습니다. 인간에서 IL-18 유전자는 11번 염색체에 위치합니다. 이 유전자에서는 다른 이소형을 인코딩하는 대안적으로 스플라이싱된 전사 변이체가 발견되었습니다.
