이 유전자는 탄수화물 및 지질 대사 조절에 필수적인 역할을 하는 펩타이드 호르몬인 인슐린을 인코딩합니다. 전구체 신호 펩타이드가 제거된 후, 프로인슐린은 번역 후 세 개의 펩타이드로 절단됩니다: 두 개의 이황화 결합을 통해 공유 결합하여 인슐린을 형성하는 B 사슬 및 A 사슬 펩타이드, 그리고 C-펩타이드. 인슐린이 인슐린 수용체(INSR)에 결합하면 포도당 흡수가 촉진됩니다. 인슐린 의존성 당뇨병, 영구 신생아 당뇨병, 젊은이 발병 당뇨병 10형 및 고프로인슐린혈증을 포함하여 표현형 효과를 가진 수많은 돌연변이 대립유전자가 확인되었습니다. 이 유전자의 5' 영역과 IGF2 유전자의 3' 영역과 겹치는 리드스루 유전자 INS-IGF2가 존재합니다.
