이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질은 막관통 (유형 I) 헤파란 황산 프로테오글리칸이며 신데칸 프로테오글리칸 계열의 구성원입니다. 신데칸은 세포 결합, 세포 신호 전달 및 세포골격 조직화를 매개하며, 신데칸 수용체는 HIV-1 tat 단백질의 내부화에 필요합니다. 신데칸-1 단백질은 통합 막 단백질로 기능하며 세포외 기질 단백질에 대한 수용체를 통해 세포 증식, 세포 이동 및 세포-기질 상호작용에 참여합니다. 변형된 신데칸-1 발현은 여러 다른 종양 유형에서 감지되었습니다. 이 유전자에는 여러 전사 변이체가 존재할 수 있지만, 현재까지 두 가지의 완전 길이 특성만 기술되었습니다. 이 두 가지는 이 유전자의 주요 변이체를 나타내며 동일한 단백질을 인코딩합니다.
