아르기나아제는 아르기닌을 오르니틴과 요소로 가수분해하는 것을 촉매합니다. 포유류 아르기나아제는 조직 분포, 세포 내 국소화, 면역학적 교차 반응성 및 생리적 기능이 다른 최소 두 가지 이소폼(I형 및 II형)이 존재합니다. 이 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 II형 이소폼은 미토콘드리아에 위치하며, 간 외 조직, 특히 신장에서 발현됩니다. 이 이소폼의 생리적 역할은 잘 알려져 있지 않지만, 산화질소 및 폴리아민 대사에 역할을 하는 것으로 생각됩니다. 대체 폴리아데닐화 부위 사용으로 인한 II형 유전자의 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
