이 유전자는 난자와 초기 배아를 둘러싸는 세포외 기질인 투명대(zona pellucida)의 구성 성분을 암호화한다. 이 기질은 수정 및 착상 전 발달 과정에서 다양한 기능을 수행하는 세네 개의 당단백질(glycoprotein)로 주로 구성된다. 생성되는 단백질은 N-말단 시그널 펩타이드(signal peptide) 서열, 보존된 ZP 도메인, 퓨린(furin) 절단 인식 부위, 그리고 C-말단 막관통 도메인(transmembrane domain)을 포함한다. 퓨린에 의한 절단이 성숙한 단백질을 세포막(plasma membrane)에서 방출시켜 투명대 기질로 편입되게 하는 것으로 가정되나, 이 과정에서 퓨린 절단의 필요성은 생쥐 연구를 통해 논란의 여지가 있다.
