ZP2는 난모세포(oocyte)와 초기 배아를 둘러싸는 세포외기질(extracellular matrix)인 투명대(zona pellucida)를 구성하는 세 가지 당단백질(glycoprotein) 중 하나로, 투명대의 구조적 성분으로 기능한다. 당화된 성숙 펩타이드(glycosylated mature peptide)는 첨체반응을 마친 정자(acrosome-reacted spermatozoa)의 이차 결합과 침투에 관여한다. ZP2가 결여된 암컷 생쥐는 안정적인 투명대 기질을 형성하지 못해 불임이 되며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 생성된다.
