이 유전자는 고도로 보존된 분비형 신호 인자인 윙리스형 MMTV 통합 부위(WNT, wingless-type MMTV integration site) 단백질 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. WNT 계열 단백질들은 WNT 핵심 도메인(WNT-core domain)을 특징으로 하며, 세포 성장 및 분화 조절을 포함한 다양한 발생 과정에서 기능한다. 이 유전자는 인간의 발생뿐만 아니라 발암 과정에도 관여할 것으로 여겨지며, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)에 의해 다수의 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 생성된다.
