유전자 개요

WIF1이 암호화하는 단백질은 배아 발생에 관여하는 세포외 신호분자인 WNT 단백질을 억제하는 기능을 한다. 이 단백질은 WNT 억제 인자(WNT inhibitory factor, WIF) 도메인 하나와 다섯 개의 표피 성장 인자(epidermal growth factor, EGF) 유사 도메인을 포함하며, 중배엽 분절(mesoderm segmentation)에 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다. 또한 종양 억제 유전자(tumor suppressor gene)로 기능하며, 다양한 암에서 후성유전적으로 침묵화되는 것으로 확인되었다.
