WArS 유전자는 트립토판(tryptophan)과 tRNA(trp)의 아미노아실화(aminoacylation)를 촉매하는 트립토파닐-tRNA 합성효소(Tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase)를 암호화합니다. 이 효소는 인터페론(interferon)에 의해 유도됩니다. WARS 유전자는 클래스 I tRNA 합성효소 계열에 속하며, 두 개의 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 네 가지 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 발견되었습니다.
