이 유전자는 세린/트레오닌 단백질 키나아제(serine/threonine protein kinase)인 백시니아 관련 키나아제(vaccinia-related kinase, VRK) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 세포자멸사(apoptosis)와 종양(tumor) 세포 성장을 조절하는 신호 전달 경로의 효과기로 작용한다. 이 유전자의 변이는 정신분열증과 연관되어 있다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)은 세포 내 위치와 생물학적 활성이 다른 여러 전사체 변이체를 생성한다.
