이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 AAA 단백질 (다양한 세포 활동과 관련된 ATPases) 계열의 구성원으로, 효모 Vps4 단백질의 상동체(homolog)입니다. 인간에서는 효모 단백질의 두 패럴로그(paralog)가 확인되었습니다. 두 인간 패럴로그는 아미노산 서열 유사성이 높으며, 효모 Vps4 및 생쥐 Skd1 단백질과도 유사합니다. 생쥐 Skd1(suppressor of K+ transport defect 1)은 효모 Vps4의 오솔로그(ortholog)로 밝혀졌습니다. 기능 연구에 따르면 두 인간 패럴로그 모두 엔도솜 구획(endosomal compartments)과 연관되며, 효모 Vps4 단백질과 유사하게 세포 내 단백질 운송에 관여합니다.
