이 단백질은 다양한 세포 활동과 관련된 ATP분해효소(AAA 단백질 계열)이며, 효모 Vps4 단백질의 상동체(homolog)이다. 인간에서는 효모 단백질의 두 패럴로그(paralog)가 확인되었다. 이들은 서로, 그리고 효모 Vps4 및 마우스 Skd1 단백질과 높은 아미노산 서열 유사성을 공유한다. 마우스 Skd1은 효모 Vps4의 오솔로그(ortholog)임이 입증되었다. 기능 연구에 따르면 두 인간 패럴로그 모두 엔도솜 구획에 결합하며, 효모 Vps4 단백질과 유사하게 세포 내 단백질 수송에 관여한다.
