이 유전자(VLDLR)는 특정 리간드의 수용체 매개 세포내이입(receptor-mediated endocytosis)에 관여하는 세포 표면 단백질을 지정합니다. 지질단백질 수용체(lipoprotein receptor)로서 VLDL-트리글리세라이드 대사와 릴린 신호 전달 경로에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 VLDLR 관련 소뇌 형성 부전증을 유발합니다. 대안적 스플라이싱을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 생성되어 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 지정합니다.
