이 유전자는 작은 신경펩타이드(small neuropeptide)인 혈관작용 장펩타이드(vasoactive intestinal peptide)의 수용체를 암호화한다. 혈관작용 장펩타이드는 평활근 이완(smooth muscle relaxation), 외분비 및 내분비 분비(exocrine and endocrine secretion), 그리고 폐와 장 상피(lung and intestinal epithelia)에서의 수분 및 이온 이동에 관여하며, 아데닐산 고리화효소(adenylate cyclase)를 활성화하는 구아닌 뉴클레오타이드 결합 단백질(guanine nucleotide binding protein)과 연관된 막 내재성 수용체(integral membrane receptor)를 통해 그 작용이 매개된다. 이 유전자에서는 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)이 발견되었다.
