이 유전자는 휴먼 (aggrecan/versican) 프로테오글리칸 계열에 속한다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 거대한 콘드로이틴 황산 프로테오글리칸으로, 세포외 기질의 주요 구성 성분이다. 이 단백질은 세포 부착, 증식, 이동 및 혈관 신생에 관여하며 조직 형태 형성 및 유지에 중심적인 역할을 한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 바그너 증후군 (Wagner syndrome) 1형의 원인이 된다. 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 다수의 전사 변이체가 이 유전자에서 발견되었다.
